Thank you to our sponsors!
SJR Ultimate started in 1990 with several Junior School students and teachers throwing a disc around during recess. In the Spring of 1991, a lunch time league evolved with four teams of grade five, six and seven students. The first champions were the Flying Knifers. As the original players moved into higher grades at the school, they maintained their enthusiasm toward the game, and the interest grew. With the encouragement of these experienced players, Phys. Ed. classes changed from Frisbee Football to real Ultimate. With the support of the Phys. Ed. staff and administration, the sport has continued to grow at SJR. Ultimate is now considered one of the major sports offered at SJR.
In the fall of 1994, we hosted our first Ultimate tournament, with just six Junior High teams. Over the years, the tournament has grown with teams from all across North America attending. Check out the Past Champions page to see how many years HBTS has been running.
There are now over 200 students from grades four to twelve playing organized Ultimate. This ranges from Ultimate Club at lunch recess for the grade fours and fives, our annual Hold Back The Snow Tournament (the largest and longest running Junior tournament in Canada), trips to Seattle by the Middle School travelling teams, two Varsity teams that have travelled across North America to compete, and four teams competing in the Winnipeg Spring Leagues and Provincial Championships. SJR’s Varsity Mixed team are the current provincial champions.
SJR has had many players (current and former) who have moved on to play at very high levels of competition: Provincial Junior, Open and Women’s teams, National Junior, Open, Mixed and Women’s teams.
